So you may not know this about me, but I used to HATE Valentine's Day. I don't believe you need to have a "special" day to show the people you love, just how much you love them. As my husband would call it, it's a "Hallmark" holiday.
As you may have found out by reading this post, I like to live each day to the fullest so at the end of the day, there are no regrets. I have no regrets. I think it's a pretty great way to live. So it's goes without saying that the people I love know I love them every single day.
But with Valentine's Day parties at school and children sharing cards, candy and toys with each other, I feel that we, as parents, now have to change our viewpoint about February 14. We gladly explain to Monkey and Lil Tank that it's a day to show others how much we care about them. With that said, here are some ways to make Valentine's Day special for your kids. It's a topic I discussed as a South Florida Parenting Mom Approved Panelist on 6 In The Mix with Roxanne Vargas on the Miami NBC station earlier this week.
How to Make Valentine’s Day Special for Your Kids
- Do crafts with them. I don't think you have to make a Pinterest-perfect craft to have fun with your kids. We kept it simple - making boxes for their keepsakes. It's so fun to see their creativity at work. We also made a Valentine’s Day heart with their picture. Great way to remember what they looked like at that age!
- Special Surprise. Our girls love balloons, so we like to have them tied to their chairs at the table so they see them when they come in for breakfast. You can also make this fun Valentine's Day toast recipe (Thanks, Pinterest) for or with them.
- Show Love Everyday. Share the story of the day they were born, compliment your child in front of another adult – giving a specific example of their good behavior, and surprise them with simple gifts through the mail – whether it's a book, pencil or stickers. I mean, don't we all love getting things in the mail?
