Post-Op Day One
So my first full day after surgery was pretty much a blur. I was still coming off of the hospital anesthesia, but as recommended by my doctor, hospital nurses and friends who have undergone surgery, I started taking my pain meds the night I got home. I spent most of the day sleeping in my new "bed" - our living room recliner which was the glider NewsyMom used to nurse Monkey & Lil Tank a few years ago. Glad to see it's proving to be useful again.
Post-Op Day Two
Day two was a little busier because the home healthcare company sent a nurse over to start my casework. While she was here she also changed my dressing. That's when Aileen & I finally got an up-close look at my shoulder. Not too bad. Just a big arrow pointing to where the surgeon made the incisions. Now, I've got more stories to tell when I go to the beach or pool.
Then it was time for therapy. A physical therapist came by to check on my sling which was apparently not positioned correctly. We didn't know. All I knew was my hand would get numb at times. He repositioned it and it feels much better now. He also showed Aileen how to dress me. I'd been walking around shirtless since we came home. It's just more comfortable that way.
The occupational therapist came about an hour later to start my therapy. She walked me through two exercises that I need to do three times a day. It felt good to take the sling off for a bit. But between the therapy and anesthesia wearing off, I started noticing some twinges of pain, although on the low end of the scale. I'm sure I will wake up in the morning in more pain than I did the previous two mornings.
Post-Op Day Three
This is the day I've been waiting for - SHOWER DAY! I'm sure NewsyMom has been waiting for it, too. But with the good, comes the bad. After several nights of uninterrupted sleep, I woke up in the wee hours of the morning with some slight discomfort. Uh oh. The anesthesia finally wore off. I took another prescription pain pill and back to la la land. I'm hoping the pain doesn't get worse.
Have you had major surgery before? How did you get through it? What was your physical therapy like? I'd love to hear your experience.
